I feel like at one point after being saved you obsess about this question. Do you and I have a purpose?
Do I have a purpose?
What are you afraid of?
Do I have a purpose
Yes you do. You have dual citizenship and as such there is duality to your purpose. Your spiritual purpose and your earthly purpose.
Your spiritual purpose is to seek God and love God with your heart, mind and soul. It is the reason we were made, to dwell with Him. That is why Jesus came to reconcile us with Him.
Your earthly purpose is the niche group God has created for you to minister to. Some people know the niche group, some do not know. Either way, what the Lord said to me is prepare, so that you are ready when you become sure.
Your purpose is not a single moment in history that is waiting for all the variables to align.
A perfect example of this is Jesus.
Jesus, the son of God was called to die for us. Jesus, came to die for us so that we could be made right in the eyes of God. The question I have is, what did Jesus do as He waited for His death?
If our purpose is a single event in our life, then His purpose was at the end of His life, so what did He spend the earlier part of His life doing?
He spent it with God. Learning, teaching and speaking life into people. So His spiritual purpose was to be with God and He did that His whole life. His earthly purpose was to die for us. If you operate on the spiritual, your earthly and spiritual purpose will converge and have the same effect; bringing glory to God.
There are a few groups I find I've seen when it comes to this topic:
Those who do not know their purpose
To not know is absolutely normal, we all begin everything without knowing. The worry I have is we obsess about what our purpose is, we remain stagnant waiting for the revelation.
“To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” Matthew 25:29 NLT
What do you have? What did God give you? Do not think too much about this question, just answer.
Are you a good story teller, then tell stories about the Bible and Jesus. Are you a writer, so write a blog, devotional or poetry. Are you a good singer, then serve in your church. Are you a good designer, then design something for your church.
Do not think money here, do not think what could make me the most money. Think what does the church need that I can provide. So for those who do not know, keep it simple? What are you good at?
Ask some friends or your family, people who know you and that is a good starting point.
2. Those who know but do not know how or when to start?
The starting point when we know what God has planted in us is to start. I know you have heard this before many times, the point is not in the when or the how, it is the starting.
“Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate.”Matthew 25:24 NLT
I am sure servant had opportunities of when and how to start, but because of overthinking, anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, they never did. There will always be a reason as to why it is not the right time, I promise you.
A fun fact is I wrote that I need to start a blog in 2021, and 3 years later is when I got the courage. I always had a reason why it was not the right time. If this blog turns out not to be what God desires, I will shut it down but at least I stepped out and started. A stumbling follower is better than one who does not follow at all.
“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.”Ecclesiastes 11:4 NLT
Do you have social media? Instagram, a phone, a laptop or a social life. Anything is a mode of speaking life into people. That's how you start, you start the conversation. With friends, in your group chats, on your Instagram or TikTok. The harvest is ripe!
My friend who is not a Christian recently told me she is seeing more Christian content on her Instagram. You are the key to someone's algorithm becoming more Christian!
What are you afraid of?
“But Moses protested again, “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?”
“But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.”
Exodus 4:1 NLT and Exodus 4:10 NLT
This is the great Moses, one of the greater leaders we see in the Bible. This is an interaction between him and the Lord when God communicates His earthly purpose, Moses had many "but's".
He feared being misunderstood. You will always be misunderstood, we are different people although guided by the one spirit, we are different so we all will misunderstand each other one way or another. However that is not a reason to not start, it is a reason to pray the spirit unites us. You do your part, and the Holy Spirit will do its part.
Do you sometimes fear the things you will say or create may not actually be from God but just opinions. Frankly, no one can ever 100% clarify if the things they say are from God. The only way to know is does it line up with scripture and does it produce good fruit that we see through the spirit. As the Bible says, we shall know them by their fruit.
Moses feared he was not a great speaker, God replies Him by asking who made the mouth, which is a pretty cutthroat answer. It is true though, what about you do you feel discredits your message that the all-knowing God has not already factored in.
An interesting nugget is in Exodus 2 NLT, the physical bible the heading is "God chooses Moses". Exodus 2 is the story of the birth of Moses. This is a similar story for us too, we were chosen before the foundations of the earth were laid and before our births. God sees us, choses us and desires us.
Your purpose is not one moment in history, your purpose starts now. Start serving, start writing, start making that music or writing that poetry. Start! There is someone out there who needs someone like you to help them believe.
For those who want the specifics of their niche:
“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for..." Ephesians 1:11-12
I love you all, take heart and ease up. I do not believe in mistakes, I believe we are always guided. So take a deep breathe and start! Thank you so much for reading!
